The Bunkers del Carmel, officially preserved as part of the MUHBA Turó de la Rovira open-air heritage site, sit atop the 262-meter (860-foot) summit of Turó de la Rovira in the Horta-Guinardó district. Renowned for providing arguably the most extraordinary, unobstructed 360-degree panoramic vista over the entire Barcelona metropolitan area, the site looks out across Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Família, the perfect grid of the Eixample district, Montjuïc, Torre Glòries, Collserola hill, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. History
Turó de la Rovira possesses a rich archaeological history dating back to an Iberian settlement from the 4th century BC. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Barcelona suffered relentless aerial bombardments by Italian Aviazione Legionaria and German Condor Legion aircraft supporting General Franco. In response, the Republican Defense Anti-Aérea (DECA) selected the commanding summit of Turó de la Rovira in 1937 to construct a major anti-aircraft battery equipped with four Vickers 105mm naval cannons, an underground ammunition depot, and acoustic sound locators. Following the Republican retreat in 1939, the guns were disabled. During the post-war housing shortages of the 1940s to 1980s, over 100 families of migrant workers built an informal shantytown community called 'Els Canons' around the abandoned military bunkers. Ahead of the 1992 Olympics, residents were rehoused into public apartments, and in 2011 MUHBA musealized the site to preserve both its military history and post-war working-class memory.
