Housed in a handsome colonial mansion on Rua Dona Geralda, the Casa da Cultura is Paraty's main cultural centre and the best quick introduction to the town's people and traditions. The ground floor usually hosts photography and temporary exhibitions. Upstairs, a colourful permanent exhibition covers local history and culture: Indigenous and quilombola crafts, typical food, traditional boats and more. It's small enough to see in under an hour, and the upstairs rooms give nice views over the old town's rooftops.
History
The building was originally built in 1754 as a private residence and warehouse, one of the many fine townhouses that went up during Paraty's gold-route heyday. After careful restoration it became the town's cultural centre and now holds a permanent exhibition on local history and culture, alongside rotating shows and events.
