Praia do Pontal

ParatyNaturePraia do Pontal, Pontal, Paraty - RJ, 23970-000, Brazil

Imagine yourself on Praia do Pontal, Paraty's beloved local beach, where the everyday life of the town unfolds before your eyes. Just a short walk from the historic centre, this beach offers a unique glimpse into the daily rhythm of Paraty. Whether you're here for a refreshing drink at one of the many kiosks, a leisurely stroll along the sandy shore, or a chance to rent a kayak to explore the waters, Praia do Pontal promises an authentic experience. As the sun sets, the view of the Igreja Matriz framed by vibrant boats becomes a picturesque backdrop, inviting you to linger a little longer. Nearby, the Forte Defensor Perpétuo stands as a testament to the town's rich history, adding another layer to your visit.

Praia do Pontal is the beach closest to Paraty's historic centre. Cross the bridge over the Perequê-Açu river next to the Igreja Matriz and walk towards the sea – you'll be on the sand in about 5–10 minutes. It isn't one of the postcard beaches of the bay, but it's the town's everyday beach and a favourite with locals. A promenade lined with kiosks and bars serves cold beer and seafood snacks, with tables, chairs and umbrellas right on the sand. From here you look back across the river mouth to the historic centre and the green mountains behind it. Because the beach sits at the mouth of an urban river, the water is often not suitable for swimming. Come for a drink and a snack in the late afternoon, a walk along the sand, or to rent a kayak or SUP – and combine it with the Forte Defensor Perpétuo, on the hill just beyond the beach.

History

The Pontal neighbourhood grew on the opposite bank of the Perequê-Açu river from the colonial town. The hill at the end of the beach, known as Morro da Vila Velha or Morro do Forte, is home to the Forte Defensor Perpétuo, built to protect the port in the days when gold from Minas Gerais was shipped out through Paraty.

Fun Facts

  • The bridge to Pontal is a classic photo spot: look back for the Igreja Matriz framed by colourful boats.
  • It's the beach locals use most, rather than the one tourists come to Paraty for.
  • The hill at the end of the beach goes by two names: Morro da Vila Velha and Morro do Forte.
