History
The park was originally created as a private estate garden by the Bethmann banking family in the 18th century. Over time, it became a public space and was officially taken over by the city of Frankfurt in 1941.
In 1989, the Chinese Garden was added as a symbol of friendship with Frankfurt’s partner city Guangzhou, introducing traditional Chinese landscape design into the heart of the city.
The park is also historically linked to famous visitors such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who reportedly walked in the area when it was still a private garden outside the city walls.
