Imagine stepping back in time to the medieval world, as you explore the Borj En Naam and Ibn Battuta Memory Exhibition in Tangier. This unique museum, housed in a historic Kasbah bastion, offers a comprehensive look at the life and travels of Tangier's most famous traveler, Ibn Battuta. Unlike simply visiting his tomb, this exhibition provides a rich, immersive experience that brings his incredible journeys to life. Whether you're a history buff or simply curious about the world Ibn Battuta crossed, this stop offers a deeper, more engaging understanding of his legacy and the medieval world he explored.

A Kasbah bastion used for an exhibition dedicated to Ibn Battuta and his journeys. It is a stronger interpretive stop than visiting the nearby tomb alone, giving guides material to explain Tangier’s most famous traveler and the wider medieval world he crossed.

History

Borj En Naam is a historic bastion in the upper Medina. After serving different civic uses, including a charitable center after independence, it was restored and rehabilitated in 2021 as an exhibition space dedicated to Tangier-born traveler Ibn Battuta and the world described in his Rihla.

Fun Facts

  • The exhibition interprets Ibn Battuta's journeys across more than two decades rather than focusing only on his tomb.
  • The restored bastion gives the Ibn Battuta story a physical setting inside Tangier's fortified historic core.

Guide Tips

  • Visit this before or after the nearby tomb so the symbolic tomb stop has proper historical context.
  • This is the stronger Ibn Battuta stop if itinerary time permits only one substantial interior visit.
