History
The museum occupies Dar al-Makhzen, the former Sultan's palace in Tangier's Kasbah. The site passed through Portuguese and English phases before the present Moroccan palace complex developed; a foundation inscription dates an important part of the palace to 1737–1738. Its architecture and collections make the building itself part of the museum experience.
