Histoire
The Kleinmarkthalle is one of Frankfurt’s most traditional food markets, with roots going back to the 19th century urban market system.
1879: First municipal market hall opened in Frankfurt at Hasengasse, created to modernize food trade and improve hygiene in a rapidly growing city.
Early 1900s: It became a central trading hub for both retail and wholesale food, reflecting Frankfurt’s role as a commercial city.
1944: The original hall was destroyed during World War II bombings.
1954: The current building was rebuilt and reopened in a post-war modernist style, becoming a symbol of Frankfurt’s economic recovery.
2000: It was placed under heritage protection due to its cultural and architectural importance.
Today, it continues the same tradition: a dense, lively indoor market where local vendors and international food stalls coexist.
