History
When preparations began for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, organizers felt the grand promenade from Plaça d'Espanya to the Palau Nacional required an extraordinary visual centerpiece. In 1928, just one year prior to the fair's opening, engineer Carles Buïgas submitted daring blueprints for a 'colossal, light-transforming fountain', which critics initially dismissed as technologically unfeasible. Buïgas mobilized over 3,000 workers who excavated subterranean tunnels, assembled hydraulic pumps, and installed pioneering pentagonal color glass filters. Inaugurated on May 19, 1929, the day before the Expo opening, the fountain stunned international dignitaries. Although damaged during the Spanish Civil War, Buïgas oversaw its restoration in 1955. In the 1980s, fully synchronized musical choreography was introduced, and before the 1992 Summer Olympics, the entire hydraulic and lighting infrastructure was thoroughly modernized.
