The Palau de la Música Catalana is an architectural and acoustic masterpiece of Catalan Modernisme located in the historic Sant Pere neighborhood of Ciutat Vella. Commissioned in 1904 by the choral society Orfeó Català and designed by visionary architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the concert hall was constructed between 1905 and 1908. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it stands as the only concert hall in Europe illuminated entirely by natural daylight during the day. The building's exterior features red brickwork, mosaic-encrusted columns, and a monumental sculptural group titled 'The Catalan Song' by Miquel Blay. At the turn of the 20th century, the Catalan cultural renaissance (Renaixença) sparked widespread passion for traditional choral music and Catalan identity. In 1904, the prominent choral society Orfeó Català (founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives) commissioned architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner to build a permanent home and civic music hall. Constructed with pioneering steel framing that allowed expansive glass curtain walls and flooded the auditorium with natural sunlight, the Palau was inaugurated on February 9, 1908. In 1997, UNESCO declared the Palau de la Música Catalana a World Heritage Site alongside the Hospital de Sant Pau, celebrating Domènech i Montaner's exuberant decorative genius.
