History
During the High Middle Ages and Renaissance (13th to 17th centuries), Passeig del Born was the civic and ceremonial epicenter of Barcelona. It functioned as the city's tournament arena where armored Catalan knights engaged in medieval jousts, civic festivals, religious processions, and Carnival celebrations. Darker chapters of history also played out here: the Spanish Inquisition held public autos-da-fé and executions on the promenade. During the 1714 Siege of Barcelona in the War of the Spanish Succession, fierce street fighting occurred here before the fall of Catalonia on September 11. In 1876, the eastern terminus of the avenue was anchored by the construction of the revolutionary iron-and-glass Mercat del Born.
