ParatyHistoryLargo do Rosário, s/n, Centro Histórico, Paraty - RJ, 23970-000

Imagine stepping back in time to the 18th century, where the spirit of a resilient community lives on in the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito. This humble church, built by enslaved Africans, stands as a testament to their faith and devotion. Nestled in the heart of Paraty's historic centre, it invites you to explore its rich history and witness the annual Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito, a celebration that has echoed through the ages. As you wander through its rustic halls, you'll find yourself captivated by the gilded carved altars, each telling a story of devotion and history. Whether you visit during the festive November celebrations or at any other time, the Igreja do Rosário offers a unique glimpse into the past, where every corner whispers tales of a community that built not just a church, but a legacy.

Known locally as Igreja do Rosário, this small church was built in the 18th century by and for the enslaved Africans of Paraty. It is plainer and more rustic than the town's other colonial churches, which is exactly what makes it moving: it was the spiritual home of a community that had little else of its own. Inside, look for the gilded carved altars, including one to São Benedito (Saint Benedict the Moor), a saint much venerated by Black brotherhoods in colonial Brazil. It sits on Largo do Rosário in the heart of the historic centre, an easy few minutes' walk from Praça do Chafariz and Rua do Comércio.

History

The church dates from around 1725 and was built by enslaved Africans, who used it as their own place of worship. A Black lay brotherhood dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary looked after it and rebuilt it in the mid-18th century. The church is still the centre of the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito, a celebration that has been held in Paraty for around 300 years.
