History

Municipal Market of São Paulo was inaugurated in 1933 to support the rapid growth of São Paulo and centralize the trade of food products arriving from different regions of Brazil and the world. Designed by architect Francisco Ramos de Azevedo, the building became famous for its grand architecture and colorful stained-glass windows created by Russian artist Conrado Sorgenicht.

For decades, the market has been one of the city’s main gastronomic and cultural landmarks, reflecting the strong influence of immigrant communities such as Italians, Portuguese, Arabs, and Japanese in São Paulo’s cuisine.
